Mixing Clay

Every year we mix this giant vat of clay in our horse watering trough. It's a lot of heavy work but for half a days work we get about 1500 lbs of clay that's ready to use in 2-3 weeks. Rankin & Ruggles were kind enough to send me instuctions for the drying racks and for the mixing. I'll gladly pass these on to anyone who's interested.

  1. The good thing about this method is that you can use the clay right away, once it's the consistency that you like. Just don't try mixing in a plastic garbage can like I did for a quick, small batch for the front of the kiln. My heavy, metal drywall mud mixing paddle scratched the sides of the can and left little bits of plastic in my clay that shows up when I'm throwing!
